León class was designed in parallel the the Bainbridge class reconnaissance frigate. It was designed to escort that class into dangerous combat zones. It uses the same tandem warp drive design as the Bainbridge class, but removes all the sensitive senor and communications system in favor of a torpedo launcher. Although designed specifically to accompany the Bainbridge class, it eventually became part of Starfleet’s fast carrier fleets as the tandem warp drive spread to other classes.
